Today's review is Luke's Red Five X-Wing which is my first adventure into not only LEGO Star Wars (except the video game) and Smart Brick LEGOs. If I'm honest, I came in expecting it to be mediocre, but I was pleasantly surprised. I know a lot of folks that are into LEGOs kind of derided the Smart Brick when it came out, but I actually think it was done tastefully, and it adds a layer to the LEGO experience. I do hope it doesn't become something that also every LEGO set gets, but in a limited fashion, I like it.
But back to the review. The box is fairly straighforward, though I do think LEGO could enhance their packaging a bit.

And the inside is standard.

The build itself is actually enjoyable. It isn't mundane. There are several distinct sections that go together well to build what is actually a whole play set. In comparison to brands like Lumibricks, I do think LEGO should start doing more printed peices vs. using stickers (this one does use multiple printed pieces, though).
The build proceeds through mutliple bags, many of them focused on the 'side pieces', and several bags on the X-Wing itself.

Pros
- Well-designed.
- Pricey, but not wildly so for a Star Wars and Smart Brick set
Cons
- None
Verdict
If you like Star Wars and you like LEGO, just go get Luke's Red Five X-Wing. It's a good first step into the Smart Bricks, it's an easy but fun build. Kids will love it.
I went in expecting to not like the set, but it actually turned out to be one of my favorites, considering the inclusion of the Smart Brick stuff and a price tag that wasn't as high as I'd expect.
